new england coffee house charm

I always enjoy visiting the charming New England town of Exeter, New Hampshire. Small but brimming with history, Exeter never ceases to delight me in some way. Today, I visited D Squared Java and enjoyed a made-to-order pour over coffee and a vegan gluten free cookie. D Squared proved to be a quality coffee house with an endearing atmosphere.

vintage finds at new england’s todd farm flea

Today was Todd Farm Flea Market’s (of Rowley, Massachusetts) opening day, and with the sunny weather, the vendors were a plenty as were the customers. I had no intention of buying anything (I just packed up my Pittsburgh apartment, after all), but of course I left with a few good finds, including a U.S. Army gas mask bag, an old, fading graphite print, and feminist-worthy pin.

boston’s north end

Boston’s North End is absolutely one of my favorite spots to visit while I’m back visiting New Hampshire. The Italian neighborhood was buzzing with people today thanks to beautiful weather and (I’m guessing) delicious canolis. My mom and I enjoyed a pasta lunch followed by pastries from Mike’s Pastry— the absolute best shop for canolis outside of Sicily. To top it off, a trip to the North End always includes a stroll along the Freedom Trail.

adventures in pittsburgh: the mattress factory

I might be over 500 miles from Pittsburgh, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enlighten you all with a post about one of my many adventures in the city. For the last couple months or so, I treated my time in Pittsburgh like a tourist and tried to check off some key items from my bucket list. The Mattress Factory was top of the list (I’m a huge fan of installation art).

While the draw to the museum seems to be the permanent exhibitions by Yayoi Kusama (Infinity Dots Mirrored room, Repetitive Vision), I was most delighted by the work of the artists in residence that filled both the  main museum building and its adjacent buildings. Sarah Oppenheimer’s 610-3356 was quite possibly the most impressive piece at the museum (in my humble opinion!), second maybe to Chiharu Shiota’s Trace of Memory, which featured a small house completely overrun with black yarn.

Regardless of which art piece strikes you the most, The Mattress Factory boasts an impressive collection of art installations and should be a must on everyone’s to do list in Pittsburgh.

*warning* this is a cat post

I just dropped my little cat, Naya, off with my sister in Connecticut for the summer. Because, in just two weeks, I’ll be heading to the Netherlands to visit my other sister. Then in August, I’ll be off to… (the big news!) the Simon Business School University of Rochester to start my MBA! Naya Cat will be in good hands for the next few months before I begin classes. Until then, I have these memories to sustain me:

five unexpected events

A not so happy traveller

A not so happy traveller

Last night, I finally arrived in Connecticut after a full day of driving from Pittsburgh. In just twenty four hours, I cleared out my apartment of everything I had accumulated from the last two years of living in the city, packed up my tiny sports car with everything I needed for the summer and my crazy little cat, and drove the long eight hour trip to my sister’s place on the east coast.

The move was so hectic that by the time I made it to CT, a blog post was out of the question. So here it is, just a few hours late, five unexpected events from a very hectic yesterday:

1. Using my cat’s leash. Naya Cat was so freaked out by the whole moving business that she wouldn’t get into her carry case, and I pulled out her leash for its first-time use. Which meant I spent eight hours with her roaming my car after she escaped from her collar. Seriously, I don’t know how we didn’t get into a car accident…

2. My one joy in long distance car rides is coffee. I love a good iced coffee on a car ride. Unfortunately, about five minutes into the road trip, Naya spilled the complete contents of my untouched coffee. We were both in for a long, long ride.

3. Losing a part of my car…and then having a friend find it again. I absently-mindedly left a part of my trunk on the side of the road while I was packing up. Thankfully, I have good enough friends willing to do slightly random favors for me. The plus side: it gives me an excuse to visit Pittsburgh soon!

4. Actually fitting my life for the next three months into my car. If you have a Toyota Celica you are constantly surprised at how much stuff you can cram in that little two door car.

5. Just an hour or so after settling in for the night in CT, Naya Cat was relaxed enough to ask for multiple belly rubs. It’s a good sign for things to come!

Cheers!

going dutch

About nine months ago my twin sister visited Pittsburgh from The Netherlands, where she currently lives. I’m going to be honest, I always considered myself the more fashionable twin….until my sister soaked up European style and returned to the States in outfits I’m constantly envious of.  I’ll be visiting my sister in Amsterdam early next month and we’ll finally be reunited. But until then, the below photos from her last trip to Pgh were too good not to share.
