adventures in pittsburgh: the mattress factory

I might be over 500 miles from Pittsburgh, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enlighten you all with a post about one of my many adventures in the city. For the last couple months or so, I treated my time in Pittsburgh like a tourist and tried to check off some key items from my bucket list. The Mattress Factory was top of the list (I’m a huge fan of installation art).

While the draw to the museum seems to be the permanent exhibitions by Yayoi Kusama (Infinity Dots Mirrored room, Repetitive Vision), I was most delighted by the work of the artists in residence that filled both the  main museum building and its adjacent buildings. Sarah Oppenheimer’s 610-3356 was quite possibly the most impressive piece at the museum (in my humble opinion!), second maybe to Chiharu Shiota’s Trace of Memory, which featured a small house completely overrun with black yarn.

Regardless of which art piece strikes you the most, The Mattress Factory boasts an impressive collection of art installations and should be a must on everyone’s to do list in Pittsburgh.

five unexpected events

A not so happy traveller

A not so happy traveller

Last night, I finally arrived in Connecticut after a full day of driving from Pittsburgh. In just twenty four hours, I cleared out my apartment of everything I had accumulated from the last two years of living in the city, packed up my tiny sports car with everything I needed for the summer and my crazy little cat, and drove the long eight hour trip to my sister’s place on the east coast.

The move was so hectic that by the time I made it to CT, a blog post was out of the question. So here it is, just a few hours late, five unexpected events from a very hectic yesterday:

1. Using my cat’s leash. Naya Cat was so freaked out by the whole moving business that she wouldn’t get into her carry case, and I pulled out her leash for its first-time use. Which meant I spent eight hours with her roaming my car after she escaped from her collar. Seriously, I don’t know how we didn’t get into a car accident…

2. My one joy in long distance car rides is coffee. I love a good iced coffee on a car ride. Unfortunately, about five minutes into the road trip, Naya spilled the complete contents of my untouched coffee. We were both in for a long, long ride.

3. Losing a part of my car…and then having a friend find it again. I absently-mindedly left a part of my trunk on the side of the road while I was packing up. Thankfully, I have good enough friends willing to do slightly random favors for me. The plus side: it gives me an excuse to visit Pittsburgh soon!

4. Actually fitting my life for the next three months into my car. If you have a Toyota Celica you are constantly surprised at how much stuff you can cram in that little two door car.

5. Just an hour or so after settling in for the night in CT, Naya Cat was relaxed enough to ask for multiple belly rubs. It’s a good sign for things to come!

Cheers!

going dutch

About nine months ago my twin sister visited Pittsburgh from The Netherlands, where she currently lives. I’m going to be honest, I always considered myself the more fashionable twin….until my sister soaked up European style and returned to the States in outfits I’m constantly envious of.  I’ll be visiting my sister in Amsterdam early next month and we’ll finally be reunited. But until then, the below photos from her last trip to Pgh were too good not to share.

adventures in pittsburgh: phipps conservatory

As my days in Pittsburgh come to a close, I wanted to be sure I did some final exploring before I left. One Pgh site left on my bucket list was Phipps Conservatory, so the other week I finally made my way over. And I wasn’t disappointed. I’ve been to a fair share of botanical gardens, and Pittsburgh’s own Phipps certainly ranks tops…just after my home town of Chicago’s stunning gardens, of course! The trip was just what I needed to relax and take a breath (of fresh air) when the last days of winter still had their grip on the city. No doubt the conservatory is even more spectacular during the summer and autumn months.

Thankfully, I still have some unique sites yet to see (Wigle Whiskey for instance). That, coupled with some great friends I’ll be leaving behind, means a trip back to Pittsburgh is in order soon enough.

Cheers!

spring packing + spring making

Today is devoted to packing. It’s unbelievable how entrenched I’ve become in my apartment after just two years. I feel like I’ve been packing for days (I have) and still haven’t made any progress (I have).

#100DaysofMiaPrima Packing

So, I took a break to work on my Spring Mix Tape project. Every season (well, fall and spring), I ask my friends to submit songs that remind them of that season in anyway, subtly or not to so subtly. I then compile the songs into what usually turns out to be a three volume set of CDs– or “mix tapes.” I also create the cover art, which I’ll admit, can get a bit out of hand at times. I usually have to create ten or more copies of each piece, after all. But the project keeps me creating, and sharing work with friends makes it absolutely worth it.

For my last mix tape, I carved a hidden space into old books. For this project, I’m going a simpler, though no less time-consuming route, and focusing on creating art “books” to store the tapes. Here’s my progress so far.

these streets

For a long time, I could never justify purchasing a beautiful new digital SLR camera. After all, I wasn’t a photographer. Sure, I have a degree in art and I create a blog that relies so much on imagery. But still, I was no Sartorialist, and I never could be. It was almost if I had convinced myself that there were so many people- bloggers, artists, whoever- being such amazing photographers that there was not room left for an ammeter to try her hand. And that who would bother looking at my work, as rudimentary as it would be, when they could look at a professional’s!?

But the truth it, no professional is having the same experiences that I’m having now: traveling, exploring my new city, finding my personal style, working in fashion, becoming a vegan athlete. And that is reason enough for me to grab a camera and shoot away. So join me on the next step with Mia Prima Casa, as I experiment and dive even deeper into what it means to be who I am, digital SLR and all.

Cheers!

Because I Can: Pittsburgh Marathon Highlights

Because I Can: Pittsburgh Marathon Highlights miaprimacasa.com

Has it already been two weeks since I crossed the finish line of the Pittsburgh Marathon? A lot has happened since then, including an amazing trip to Europe to visit my sister. I can’t wait to tell you all about our adventures in The Netherlands and Italy, but before I do, I want to share some highlights from my second full marathon.

I don’t think I’ve ever had more fun at a race, ever. I didn’t think things would pan out that way. This was the first race where no one was waiting for me at the finish line…and the first major race I wasn’t running with my sister. I figured I’d get the race done and move on to my next race (triathlon, maybe?), no big whoop. Except that right from the beginning I didn’t feel like I was running alone. My friends and family signed up for text alerts that let them know the second I crossed certain milestones in the race, my coworkers were running the half marathon and although they weren’t along side me for the race, it was a comfort to know they were there, and, of course, I was running with thousands of other people. No matter how many races I run, I will always be in awe of completing a single, grueling task with thousands of strangers. We were all there to do one thing: finish the race. It doesn’t matter how long it took us to get to that start line or what problems we had to face or why were really there at all. What matters is that we are there, pushing ourselves to our limit. And we aren’t doing it alone.

Endurance running can often be a long, lonely sport, but in the end, it’s the community that keeps me coming back to the start line.

“Why are we doing this again?” A young female runner next to me asked. I was standing in my coral with minutes to the start, talking with the only two veteran marathon runners I could find nearby (the coral was a mixture of half, relay, and full runners).

We all laughed. Amused at our own tenacity, courage, insanity, whatever.

“Because we can,” replied the middle-aged woman next to me. “I could be in a wheel chair right now. Or going through chemo therapy. But I’m not.”

And isn’t running for 26.2 miles straight the ultimate gesture of thankfulness? Thankfulness for our health, our self-discipline, our support.

Nope, endurance running isn’t lonely. Sure, I’m the one who gets the metal at the end, but if I could give one to every person who inspired and supported me through my journey to the finish (and the start), I would. Or even better, I’d ask them to go out and try for their own metal. No matter if it’s a 5k or an ultra, finishing a race is an experience you will never forget.

Cheers!

Pirates, Sparkle, & 16 Miles

Easter in Pittsburgh miaprimcasa.com

Being away from family can be hard enough, but when holidays roll around it becomes that much harder. Thankfully, for Easter this year, my little sister was able to take a break from being a genius med student at RIT to spend the weekend with me here in Pittsburgh. The weather was perfect! And compared to Rochester, NY, it probably felt like heaven.

Pittsburgh- Oakland

Before Michelle made it down here on Saturday afternoon, I snuck in a 16 mile marathon taper run. Why am I tell you this? Because sometimes, when you’ve run over 20 miles in one go, you start to forget that even 16 miles is impressive. This is my attempt at reminding myself that running 16 miles (or any amount for that matter!) is an accomplishment–one of which I should always be proud!

Stay Classy (lots of sparkle included)

Sparkle was a key component of our Easter weekend attire.

Pirates Baseball Pittsburgh, PA

I took Michelle to her first professional baseball game. The Pirates lost, but it was an exciting game no less, complete with the classic Pittsburgh Pirates fireworks show. (By the way, I don’t think I’ve ever been to a professional baseball game that didn’t involve the Brewers. Seriously. I saw the Cubs play them in Chicago…then again in Milwaukee…and now they played the Pirates in my new city. It’s like my Wisconsin ancestors are trying to speak to me…)

Homemade Vegan Squash & Kale Pizzas miaprimacasa.com

Instead of the traditional Easter ham dinner, we opted for homemade squash pizzas, complete with kale, Brussels sprouts, and vegan cheese. Recipe (Michelle’s original) soon to follow!

Madewell fruit dress + Merino sweater + lots of sparkle miaprimacasa.com Springtime outfit miaprimcasa.com

My Easter outfit of choice: Madewell fruit dress, Lands’ End Canvas Merino sweater, vintage Salvatore Ferragamo heels, statement necklace (a great find from a Chicago second hand shop), and a gorgeous sparkly clutch (a gift from an old roommate). Michelle looked gorgeous in an Loft eyelet tee, J.crew cardigan, Ann Taylor pencil skirt, and sparkly J.crew flats.

Easer outfits

Hope you all had a fabulous Easter weekend as well! Here’s to more sunny days filled with Pirates, sparkle, and lots and lots of miles.

Cheers!
