#OOTD in dubrovnik, croatia

While it’s true that I saw many fashion blunders (think: tourists) in the coastal city of Dubrovnik, I also twice as many outfits that captured the essence of the seaside city perfectly and stylishly.  In the photography below, I have distilled what I’ve seen of Dubrovnik street (and sea) fashion into a single outfit. Inspired by locals and style-conscious tourists alike. What do you think? Does it capture the spirit of this medieval town?

windows to the world in dubrovnik, croatia

Dubrovnik is a ancient wall city that hugs the Adriatic coast. It’s old buildings and rich history provide views like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Through 16th century church windows, spy holes that dot the medieval walls, and venerable Roman ruins, I spotted some breath-taking views that range from the clear waters of the Adriatic to leafy hill tops. What’s captured through these windows is more than a scene; they reflect the unforgettable experience of pausing and seeing the world anew.

When in Italy…

swimming (practice) in croatia

In less than three months, I’ll compete in my third triathlon. As a marathon runner, the 5k portion of the sprint triathlon is not at all intimidating. The cycling and swimming portions are a different matter, however. Thankfully, I’ve had the unique opportunity to practice cycling in the country that knows it best: The Netherlands. I’ve honed my “defensive” cycling skills, learning how to dodge traffic (pedestrian and fellow cyclists mostly), I’ve sharpened my problem-solving skills (Dutch bike are robust but with daily use issues are inevitable), and I have simply (and probably most importantly) spent more time getting comfortable in the saddle.

But where the Netherlands offers excelling cycling opportunities, chances to practice open water swimming are slim. The clear Adriatic waters in Croatia were a welcome opportunity to get some real open water practice in. The best swimming I found was on the island of Mljet, an enchanting place where lavender grows wild, tiny yellow butterflies flit about the salty air, and where, supposedly, Odysseus spent seven years in the arms of Calypso. The island contains a salt water “lake” that provides warm waters and perfect, peaceful swimming.

I have a lot more swimming practice to go, but swimming in Croatia has certainly helped calm my nerves about swimming in open water. After all, a dip in the crystal waters of Mljet demands that one stop, take a deep breath, and enjoy the moment. When I plunge into the cold waters of the Finger Lakes in upstate New York for triathlon #3 this fall, I’m going to hold on to the memory of the salty Adriatic for as long as I can!

the cats of dubrovnik

These cuties are everywhere, and I’m happy to say most look healthy, clean, and social. It’s clear that locals in the Croatian sea town of Dubrovnik care for the little stray cats that roam the cobblestones. Many of the cats are happy to approach people or simple lounge besides them– food prospects or no.

Dubrovnik Croatia #100DaysofMiaPrima

The bus pulled away from the airport, rounded a hill, and I looked out to see a site that’d take my breath away: gray-green hills, sparkling water, and boats that blinked in the evening sunlight. What a welcome to Croatia! I’m looking forward to a visit to the Gruz markets tomorrow morning for some fresh Mediterranean food, a jaunt into Old Town, and a hike up to Srd.
