#ootd in berlin, germany

Parisians are effortlessly stylish. Londoners are on top of the trends. And Italians always have the chicest leather jackets. But Berliners have a style that is, in my opinion, truly the most unique. I loved how so much of the street fashion I saw was vintage or retro inspired. And a fashion “uniform” of any kinda (think, for example: skinny jeans, white tee, leather jacket) seems nonexistent.

Below, I’ve tried my best to distill the street fashion of Berlin into one photograph. But what you should really take away from it is not the exact outfit but the spirit of the German city’s style: individual, colorful, and retro. And most importantly, really freaking cool.

vintage (german) handmade scrunchies

I made a point of visiting Berlin’s Humana (similar to a US GoodWill) when in the German city a couple days ago. I love to see the different vintage styles that each European city has. Amsterdam is saturated in hip, bright 90s vintage, and Berlin doesn’t seem to be too different. However, what I found particularly interesting about Berlin vintage is that a portion of it belonged to East Berlin, which was dominated by DDR-sponsored fashion. Which meant cheap, plastic fabrics and styles that tended to run behind Western Germany’s trends. But this unique fashion history makes Berlin that much more interesting while shopping for vintage.

The Humana I visited in Berlin just happens to be the largest one in all of Europe, and I spent a number of hours diligently scouring each of the four floors for great vintage finds to add to my Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl.

To my luck, I discovered five handmade vintage scrunchies and snatched them up immediately. What a unique find that seems to me to represent the 80s/90s vintage vibe of Berlin today and the ingenuity of East Berliners who strove to reflect their individuality in a stifling society.

Check back soon on The Gibbson Girl to see these scrunchies again!

from iced coffee to vintage scrunchies: a day in berlin

I’m not sure if I love Berlin because of its culture, street art, and unique fashion sense or because today I was able to enjoy a vegan iced coffee and vegan burrito…but seriously, the iced coffee was a coconut water cold press with coconut milk! Whatever the reason (and I’m sure it’s all of them), I had an excellent Day #3 exploring Berlin. Unlike yesterday, I opted for public transit over cycling, as my day was packed with sites across the city. It was a morning of museums at the DDR museum and Gemäldegalerie followed by the wall art of the East Side Gallery and thrift shopping at Friedrichshain and Europe’s largest Humana (similar to the US’s GoodWill).

And yes, I bought a delicious iced coffee. But I also purchased five handmade vintage scrunchies, a crochet tank top, a tofu burger, and innumerable postcards. I don’t think I could have topped that.

Hallo, Deutschland!

A Day in Berlin (As Told Through Food)

a day in berlin (as told through food)

Day #2 in Berlin was jammed packed, especially since I chose to cycle instead of take public trans (and inevitably got lost fairly often). The day started early…and rough with one embarrassing crash into the curb (the slow-mo kind that has every pedestrian ogling), one spilled cappuccino, and one lost map. But things got rolling again soon and I cycling my way to every site on my itinerary. The best way to sum up my day is to lay it out meal by meal. After all, I’ll admit that the moments I love most on vacation are the ones where I’m eating!

Amazing food, and can you believe I kept it all under 25 Euros!? Looking forward to seeing eating what tomorrow brings.

hallo, deutschland!

Next stop on my European adventure: Berlin! I’ve been to Germany before (Munich…and I LOVED it!), but I knew that Berlin was a whole different world than Bavaria. I’ve wanted to visit Germany’s largest city for some time now, so it’s hard to believe I’m here already! And I have to say…I’ve only been in the city for a few hours, but I feel very comfortable here. Maybe because the language isn’t a far cry from Dutch and I’ve gotten used to spending so much time in Netherlands or maybe it feels good to be back in a big, bustling city. Either way, I’ve already had a great time visiting the Berlin Wall Memorial and enjoying (cheap!) Syrian food. Tomorrow is jammed back with tourist-y adventures and thrift shop excursions.
