a new look for mia prima casa

I founded the Mia Prima Casa (which means “my new house” in Italian) blog three years ago as a way to keep family and friends updated on everything I was up to post-college. This usually meant updates on how I was decorating my new (first!) apartment, what I was I was eating (usually plants), and what I was wearing.

Gibbson Girl: Vintage, travel, and style for the adventurous woman.

Today, Mia Prima Casa has a whole new look. I like to think the blog now more closely represents the woman I am today: well traveled, well dressed (or at least trying to be!), and beginning a whole new chapter (business school).

Mia Prima Casa is far from gone, but she goes by a new name now. The Gibbson Girl, which is based off the 1910s fashion icon, evokes a sense of adventure, travel, and boldness. She has a vintage flare. Wears a crazy hat with confidence. Runs marathons. Travels to London. And most of all loves a night in with her cat, watching Downton Abbey and sneaking looks at her old travel diary pages.

I am so ready for this new chapter. And I hope you all are ready to meet the Gibbson Girl.

Cheers!

Summer is officially here! I just left Amsterdam (where the temp just dropped to sixty degrees and the sun was reluctant to shine), so I needed a reminder of sunny days and warm breezes. Here are some of my vintage Etsy shop The Gibbson Girl’s best summer styles.

Personally, I’m particularly fond of the sheer blouse. What is your favorite summer style from the shop?

Besides having twice as much fun, hanging out with my twin sister also gives me the opportunity to use her as my model for my vintage Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl. Usually, I photograph myself wearing the vintage styles that I sell in the online shop, but the process is usually tedious and well, not super fun. But I love taking photos of my sister wearing the clothes. Recently, we decked her out in some of my favorite European vintage finds and conducted a photoshoot among the cobblestone streets and narrow canals of Den Bosch.

I think we got some pretty darn good shots! Now you’ll have to check to back soon for these pieces on the Etsy shop. 🙂

vintage (german) handmade scrunchies

I made a point of visiting Berlin’s Humana (similar to a US GoodWill) when in the German city a couple days ago. I love to see the different vintage styles that each European city has. Amsterdam is saturated in hip, bright 90s vintage, and Berlin doesn’t seem to be too different. However, what I found particularly interesting about Berlin vintage is that a portion of it belonged to East Berlin, which was dominated by DDR-sponsored fashion. Which meant cheap, plastic fabrics and styles that tended to run behind Western Germany’s trends. But this unique fashion history makes Berlin that much more interesting while shopping for vintage.

The Humana I visited in Berlin just happens to be the largest one in all of Europe, and I spent a number of hours diligently scouring each of the four floors for great vintage finds to add to my Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl.

To my luck, I discovered five handmade vintage scrunchies and snatched them up immediately. What a unique find that seems to me to represent the 80s/90s vintage vibe of Berlin today and the ingenuity of East Berliners who strove to reflect their individuality in a stifling society.

Check back soon on The Gibbson Girl to see these scrunchies again!

Can You Dig It?

can you dig it?

Lately, I’ve been fairly addicted to the British TV detective drama, George Gently. I’m a huge fan of British crime shows in general (Sherlock, Inspector Morse, Endeavour, Lewis…), but I’m particularly keen on ones that showcase vintage fashions. Gently takes place in North East England in the late 1960s. For my vintage clothing Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl, I’m always on the look out for 60s clothing. It’s absolutely my favorite era, clothing-wise: a-line dresses, bright colors, floral prints, charming glasses frames, and skinny ties. Love it!

While I haven’t acquired much 60s wear (yet!) for the Gibbson Girl, I do have some 1970s (my second favorite era!) vintage pieces that are, well, far out, man.

my first flea market adventure

The weather was cold and windy yesterday for my first flea market selling the Gibbson Girl’s vintage clothing wears. Unfortunately, this translated into low traffic and low sales for this first try. That said, I still had a great time hanging out with my younger sister, people watching, and chatting with fellow vendors. It was a good experience, despite the disappointments. I’ll be giving it another go next weekend, so wish me better luck next time!

It Doesn’t Get Better Than Tom Boy, Ambiguous Neutrals, & Moto! (i.e. My Fave Autumn Trends)

Autumn 2013 Trends

Every fall it’s impossible not to find a handful of beautiful, inspiration trends, and this year is no different. Here are my top faves…and who is doing them best!

Free People Neutrals

1. Ambiguous Neutrals

I love this trend for cosmetics in particular (I’m addicted to a pale, barely-there nail color), but it translates effortlessly to apparel too…and even better in lingerie and intimates. Free People wins my vote for offering a gorgeous selection of nude intimates. Browse their ethereal “Sheer Shop” and just try not to buy something…

Madewell Tom Boy Style

2. Borrowed from the Boys

Madewell is my top retailer for tom boy styles. But instead of being in-your-face boyish, Madewell strikes a perfect balance between sexy and casual cool. Let’s be honest, pulling off a tom boy look is 80% attitude. My personal style is certainly more feminine (and definitely not cool enough), but adding a touch of tom boy helps keep things in check. Like those weeks when I know I’m wearing too many dresses with cardigans, my Madewell slouchy rugby stripe sweater is there to save the day.

GAP moto

3. Moto

Good ol’ GAP has one of the best selections of moto-inspired apparel this season. An extra plus? At the GAP, you won’t break the bank on a hot trend (I got this jacket for 30% off). If I weren’t buying clothes for three months (my newest challenge now that the triathlon is over), I’d be all over their moto pants. And coated jeans. And moto puffer jacket. And biker jeggings….

Bien Fait Sweater Madewellj.crew horse sweater

4. The Conversation Sweater

j.crew and Madewell get the tie for this one. Mostly because I really, really want the Bien Fait sweater. Get it? If not, désolé, je ne suis pas désolé. 😉

Forever 21 Varsity Letter Jacket

5. Sporty

…but definitely not a yoga-pant, sweatshirt look. Instead varsity letter jackets, rugby stripes, and boxy cuts make this trend. Forever 21 gets the job done at their usual how-the-heck-do-they-do-it?! low prices. For me this trends might mean sneaking my ever-growing workout wardrobe into my daily wear. Think: Nike Luxe Track Pants.

What’s your favorite autumn trend? Do you think my list is missing anything?
