In the photograph below, I have distilled what I’ve seen of Paris street fashion into a single outfit. What do you think? Does it capture the essence of the city?

It feels like just yesterday that I opened my Etsy vintage clothing shop, The Gibbson Girl. But today, the shop boasts over fifty items for sale! And I haven’t stopped my search for unique vintage pieces while I’m in Europe. In fact, I’ve had some amazing opportunities to discover truly one-of-a-kind vintage items from unique locales. Here’s a sneak peek of what will be popping up on my shop from my European adventures:

la beauté dans la mort

The last time I was in Paris (four years ago), I visited the typical tourist attractions: the Eiffel Tower, the Champe des L’Eels, the Louvre… So this weekend, with these main tourist sites of the way (so to speak), I made sure I made time to explore new locals. My sister, a fan of Oscar Wilde, suggested the Cimetière du Père-Lachaise. And I had been determined to visit the Catacombs ever since I tried and failed three years ago (fun fact: they’re closed on Mondays). The result was a day no doubt a bid morbid. But no less inspiring. In truth, there is la beauté dans la mort.

“Yes, death. Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one’s head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no to-morrow. To forget time, to forget life, to be at peace.”

-Oscar Wilde

bonjour, paris!

After three different trains (The Netherlands, Belgium, France), I’ve made it to Paris! I’ve walked over nine miles today while exploring the city (in the rain). Tomorrow morning I’ll be up bright and early to head to the Catacombs before visiting the Cimetière du Père-Lachaise (where Oscar Wilde in buried) as well a bike tour of the city.

Great Finds: Parisian Poster Coasters

Apparently, I have great luck in finding interesting art coasters (see my Great Finds: Baroque Coasters). I picked up these Parisian coasters at the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Posters of Paris: Toulouse-Lautrec and His Contemporaries. Not only was the exhibit magnificent (these posters were responsible, after all, for “giving Paris a museum of pictures, an open-air exhibition”), but I got a great deal on the coasters, which cost me only $8.

Au revior!
