10 Things that Honestly & Truly Make Being Single Awesome

I’ve been single for a long time. Like, seriously, a loooong time. So when I first started seeing articles with titles like, “10 Reasons Why Being Single is Actually Great” or “Single This Holiday Season? How to Deal” or “How to Be Alone (Without Being Miserable),” I eagerly clicked into each one, expecting to sigh and nod my head in agreement to each generalized, simplified line after the next. Instead, I started to get the idea that for a woman, being single was seen as a waiting place, a place to “find yourself” in your early twenties so that your experiences will lead you to the right partner. I’ve heard newly single celebrities call being (young and) single a “rite of passage,” as if it’s a short, thrilling, test of bravery.

But the thing is, being single doesn’t have to be a lonely, stopping place, where we binge watch Netflix shows, eat ice cream, sleep with dangerous men, and dream about finding our husbands. Maybe we should stop seeing single-dome as a temporary ailment, and think of it as a (permanent) state of mind. I’m not saying that all us single ladies should throw in the towel and vow to stay single forever. But maybe we need to realize that being single does really and truly give us the freedom to be adventurous- and that’s certainly an attitude worth keeping even as we do find our partners.

This line from a Marie Claire articles says it so well: “Repeated studies have found that the more educated a woman is, the more likely she is to marry, and the older she marries, the less likely she’ll divorce- so statistically speaking, if you want to get married, you will.” So maybe we should put this whole single thing in perspective. You probably have less time here in single-dome than you think, and what you do here, the people you meet, the risks you take, are going to define the non-single person you’re one day going to become.

So, I’ve scoured the inter webs for the best, and most honest, reasons why being single is awesome, and put together my own list. Here’s to hoping that this one inspires us all to embrace the life we’re living, single and all.

10 Things that Honestly and Truly Make Being Single Awesome

1. Your money is your own. Seriously. Just yours.

2. Not sharing the bed. If you’ve never slept diagonally on a king size bed just because you could, you’re truly missing out.

3. Learn to trust yourself. And don’t mean in this in some deeply emotional way. I mean, trusting that you are smart and inventive enough to fix your broken window. Or change a headlight. Or carry an armchair up three flights of narrow steps. By yourself.

4. You don’t feel like you have to shave everyday. Or, you know, like ever.

freedom

5. You can take a job in Europe. And not worry about how much long distance phone calls are going to cost or how you’re going to split your precious time at home between your boyfriend/parents/siblings/friends. (Follow my sister’s blog for the down low on how being single abroad is working for her. Hint: very well).

6. No drama. No arguments. (but you still have to listen to your friends’)

7. Perfecting the art of being alone but not being lonely.

8. The ability to fart in peace. Don’t take this gift for granted.

9. There’s only one important schedule in your life: yours.

10. Single women exercise more frequently than married women. They have less debt than couples. They are at a lower risk for obesity than married women.

Need I go on?

Pittsburgh Marathon, Here I Come!

AZ Marathon

I’m ready to take on my second full (that’s 26.2 miles!) marathon…or at least I will be ready by May 4th. This time I’m sticking local (for my first marathon, I made the haul up to to Duluth, Minnesota) and running in the Pittsburgh Marathon. Probably the most exciting thing is that my little sister will be joining me as well as some awesome coworkers. Only one thing is better than running alone. And that’s running with friends. Here we go!

NaNoWriMo? Check!

One month, and 50,000 words later, and I’ve completed my first National Novel Writing Month. My first novel (still can’t get over saying that!) is loosely based on the romantic heroines from three of my most favorite Jane Austen novels. Like I told my sister, I think the novel ended up becoming a weird hyperbole of my life as a working post-grad. Whether that’s good or bad, only a solid revision process and some honest feedback from friends can say….

Exploring Carnegie Library and leaving with 2,000 more words than I started with!

NaNoWriMo Tea

The best day of NaNoWriMo was when I made a stop at the local record store to buy some vintage Beatles and CCR records, then enjoyed a tea at a local coffee shop while the snow started to fall outside.

Post NaNoWriMo

Three great reason to help get my up early on a Saturday and my new gps watch for added motivation! I got a lot less sleep in Novemeber than I would have liked, but I can’t deny that it was worth it.

NaNoWriMo Winner!

Enough said. 🙂

So glad to say that most of my friends who joined me on this adventure finished successfully as well! Congrats to the ladies of  ex-pat x and Hanger Hiatus. Check out their blogs for what inspired them during NaNoWriMo and what they’re up to now.

Ciao!

It’s NaNoWriMo Time, Folks

I’m 11,000 words into my first novel. Only nine days of writing and already 11,000 words! Not too shabby. I’m going to ignore the fact that my sister is 20,000 words in right now, and take a moment to celebrate some other cool achievements of November:

Veganomicon

1. I’ve been a vegetarian for a month and a half! And despite the occasional temptation of proscuitto, it’s been surprisingly easy. The Veganomicon cookbook has been an excellent resource for delicious recipes, including baked goods (my weakness).

Be the inspiration

2. I’ve started a new training plan with a goal of a half Ironman this summer. Don’t worry, I’ll be sharing my trials and tribulations right here on occassion!

3monthsnoclothesshopping

3. In September, I had a goal of not buying any piece of clothing for three months. Well, I lasted two months. I had to buy a new pair of jeans, okay!? Despite falling one month short, I am pretty proud of myself. I remember in detail the moment I put a patchwork maxi skirt back on the rack at GoodWill. Best $2 not spent.

Now back to National Novel Writing Month. I’ve got one month to write 50,000 words. Check out my progress here, and I dare you to start your own adventure this November (no, not shaving your beard doesn’t qualify).

Ciao,

Sarah

p.s. In honor of NaNoWriMo, I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite reads.

Adventures in Pittsburgh: The Cafe at the Frick

Frick Cafe Pgh Tea

When I learned that The Cafe at the Frick, which is situated on the beautiful Frick Park grounds, served proper afternoon tea, I couldn’t wait for a free Sunday afternoon to give it a try.

Frick Cafe Pittsburgh

My high expectations were not let down! For $18, I enjoyed four different types of salads (crab, beet, tuna, and egg), two scones (orange and lavender) complete with English sweet cream and strawberry preserves, a variety of four cookies made perfect with chocolate sauce, and of course hot tea (I chose the Frick’s specialty blend).

I also enjoyed the perfect autumn weather and a gorgeous view of the gardens surrounding the Clayton mansion. Not to mention, I was reading Jane Austen’s Emma the whole time, which let me tell you, when coupled with tea, is probably the most sublime experience you’ll have in a long time. Reading about Emma discovering her love for Mr. Knightley while eating a lavender scone, is a Jane Austen lovers dream, I would think!

Frick Museum Pgh

To top it off, the service was excellent. Before they closed at 5pm, I even had time to take a look at the art galleries, which hold a great experience of their own.

Three Months. No Shopping. Bring it on.

How often to do you go clothes shopping? If I’m totally honest, I probably buy 2-3 pieces of clothing, shoes, or accessories every month. This might not be so tough on my wallet if I stuck to shops like Forever 21 and H&M, but I truly believe in building a quality wardrobe (think: style over fashion), so I end shopping at places like Lands’ End Canvas, Pickwick & Wleller, or Threadless. And that can do a number on anyone’s budget!

On September 1st, a good friend of mine dared to embark on a courageous (she works in the fashion industry, after all) journey: she is not going to buy a single piece of clothing (shoes and accessories included) for a whole year. Her blog is well-written and super entertaining, so be sure to check it out here!
I wish I could join her, but to be totally honest, I don’t think I’ve totally built up a solid enough wardrobe to take on the task (I work in the fashion industry too, remember!), especially since I’ve only really been spending good money on my wardrobe since graduating college a year and a half ago. However, my fall and winter wardrobe is the most robust season represented in my closet…
So for three months, I’m giving up clothes shopping all together. Here are my rules:
-No clothes shopping (shoes and accessories included). Excluding…
  1. If a staple item breaks or becomes unwearable (think: black leather ballet flats or sports bra).
  2. A (needed) lingerie or sleepwear purchase.
  3. Gifts for family or friends.
  4. Materials to make or tailor my own clothes.
3Months#noclothesshopping
Tank- Pickwick & Weller, Tank- Mango, Sandals- American Eagle Outfitters, Pants- American Eagle Outfitters, Watch- Fossil, Cameo Bracelet- vintage find, Necklace- RocksNSoul, Earrings- Swarovski
For three months, what I usually budget for clothing every month will be added to savings. If this (it’s my first!) triathlon goes well on Sunday, I’m going to put the savings towards a triathlon bike next season.
So wish me luck! Maybe I’ll even dare to go to six months…
Ciao,
Sarah

See Ya Later, Madison; Hello, Pittsburgh!

Not long after I completed one of my greatest adventures of the year, running my first full marathon, I started a whole new adventure when I moved from Madison, WI to Pittsburgh. This isn’t my first time out East (I lived in New Hampshire for a bit), but it’s certainly a change from what I’m used to back in the Midwest. For instance, there are hills here. Like, real hills.

So while the summer might be coming to a close, my adventure has just begun, and I can’t wait to update you all on how I decorate my new place (a very charming, 80 year tudor home), explore the city, and train for new races (this time a triathlon!).

Some things about the city I’m already falling in love with…

The Strip District Pgh

Hot Metal Bridge

Crazy Mocha Pgh

Weird, awesome coffee shops. So many more to try…
