prepping for the flea

I spent the day getting The Gibbson Girl ready for the flea market! This Sunday I’ll step out of my comfort zone to sell my vintage wares person-to-person at a local flea market. Wish me luck! (And if you have any tips, I’m all ears!).

going dutch

About nine months ago my twin sister visited Pittsburgh from The Netherlands, where she currently lives. I’m going to be honest, I always considered myself the more fashionable twin….until my sister soaked up European style and returned to the States in outfits I’m constantly envious of.  I’ll be visiting my sister in Amsterdam early next month and we’ll finally be reunited. But until then, the below photos from her last trip to Pgh were too good not to share.

vintage adventures in texas

I have always loved vintage shopping (or thrift shopping or antiquing…), but I’ve been even more keen on it after launching my vintage clothing shop, The Gibbson Girl. Just a week ago, I went on an adventure through Texas, a state I had never been to before. I visited Houston, Austin, and Dallas, and I had and excellent time exploring vintage and antique shops in those unique Texan cities. Here are some of my favorite shots, including some styles you’ll see in my shop soon enough!

so that’s what she’s been up to…

Sure, I took a hiatus from this blog for a couple months. But trust me it was worth it.

pearls, crystals, gems: handmade by abuse survivors

I spent one afternoon a couple weekends ago snapping shots of beautiful handmade jewelry for the nonprofit The Uncovered Artistry Project (i.e. the nonprofit I founded five years ago with my sister!). The nonprofit, which boasts an online boutique, sells the artisan work of domestic and sexual abuse survivors. Because we believe art and entrepreneurship are pretty darn empowering.

Below are some of my favorite shots of some of the stunning jewelry we are currently selling in the boutique.

progress, progress

I’ve lived in Pittsburgh (and the same apartment) for over a year. For the last, well, decade, I haven’t stayed in one place for more than twelve months. Finally, I’ve had time to settle in to my new place and begin to claim it as my own. My living room, dinning room, and kitchen were more or less done six months ago. (Mostly given to that the fact that my kitchen is smaller than a walk-in closet) But my bedroom has taken longer to come together. I wanted a simple, neutral pallets of whites and creams with a focus on texture. What ended up unfolding is far from that but no less awesome. Actually, probably way more fun to look at. I have images and color everywhere, yet somehow everything still seems comfortable and in order. It’s the perfect embodiment of my style: classic and neat but undoubtably sprinkled with color and pattern. The room has a way to go, but so far, it’s a pretty good start.

what’s in my ferragamo? #girlboss

I like to share what I’m reading. Why? Because books are so much better when you can talk about them. If you’ve ever read Pride and Prejudice and made it to the “Mr.Darcy letter scene,” and you have no one to share in your agonizing joy, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. Or, oh, let’s say you’ve just finished Allegiant and for some reason NO ONE at your office has finished it too. Who are you supposed to get angry with!?

That said, here’s my first post in a silly-titled series, I’m calling, “What’s in My Ferragamo?” Of course, I’m referring to my black Ferragamo bag that just happens to be the perfect size to fit whatever I’m reading at the moment.

#GIRLBOSS

#GIRLBOSS by NastyGal CEO, Sophia Amoruso. If you haven’t heard of NastyGal, don’t worry, you can click this link without of fear of sexually explicit content (trust me).

#GIRLBOSS

Here’s my two cents on the read: Amoruso’s story is impressive and her advice is inspirational, but her business tips come off a bit too elementary for my taste. (Of course, that’s coming from me- a girl with a business degree who also happens to work in fashion industry.) Nevertheless, it reenergized my passion for fashion (business), and there are some pretty awesome quotables in there too. Not to mention some charming illustrations.

So? Have you read #GIRLBOSS? What do you think?

Cheers!
