Design Inspiration for My New Place

Just about a year ago, I was moving into my first place and starting this blog (in Italian, “la mia prima casa” means my first house) to catalog my adventures. This week, my sister and I are moving into our second place. When we first moved, we wanted an eclectic, comfortable space, but faced the problems of living in an old house (bad trim, wall colors that didn’t fit our palette, and an outdated kitchen). Our second place is newer and lighter, with higher ceilings and a modern look. Our new decor inspiration is open, comfortable, and a mix of patterns with pops of bold colors. Below are my favorite inspiration images for my newest place.

5 Reasons Why I Absolutely Love Wisconsin

GrumpTrollBrewery Mt.Horeb, WI

1. Beer

I’ve never tried such a variety of amazing local beers as I have in Wisconsin. The (many, many) micro-breweries are my favorite, including the Lake Front Brewery in Milwaukee, the Grumpy Troll in Mt. Horeb, and One Barrel in Madison. I also love Wisconsin Old Fashioneds.…but that’s another story.

WI Farms

2. Farms

I love cows. I love rolling hills. I love Wisconsin.

WI State Fair

3. The People

I’ve always believed that Midwesterns are the most genuinely nice people in the States, and Wisconsinites are no exception. For example, I get a smile and wave from every person I cross when I’m on my runs…even the teenagers say hello.

Wi Trails

4. Trails

The state trails and parks are truly amazing in Wisconsin.

Madison, WI

5. Madison

Madison is a young, vibrant, beautiful city. I enjoy spending time at the parks and lakes, strolling State St. and the Capitol Square, roaming the huge Saturday Farmer’s Market, bar hopping, and of course, bike riding.

Why do you love Wisconsin?

Great Finds at Belmont Army Store, Chicago

A couple weekends ago, I spent an afternoon shopping around Boystown, Chicago with a couple friends. I lived in downtown Chicago for about five months, but I had never really properly explored this part of the city. Coming from Madison, it was refreshing to see the vibrancy and energy of Chicago…not to mention all the amazing places to go shopping. One of my favorite places from this trip was the Belmont Army Store, which boasted four floors of amazing and unique merchandise. The first floor was a hip, urban boutique, the second a shoe store, the third an army surplus store (coming back here when I have more time to explore this for longer!) and the fourth a perfectly overwhelming vintage shop. I think I could have spent a good half a day in there, but being pressed for time (our parking meter was dangerously close to running out, and we were still at least five L stops away), I only purchased one dress, below, by BB Dakota for $72. That’s more than I would usually spend on a dress, but the fit is perfect and $72 is worth the experience of this shop!Chicago Army Store 2Chicago Army Store 3Chicago Army Store 1Boystown ChicagoBoystown Chicago 1What’s your favorite Chicago find?

Windy City Run: Lake Front Trail & Grant Park

LakeFrontTrailRun- Chicago

Wow, was it great to be back in Chicago! My sister and I went down to the city for Easter weekend and took the opportunity to run through Grant Park and the Lake Front Trail. I started training for distance races about nine months ago, so I never ran in downtown Chicago when I lived in the city. Now I realize what I missed! The day was a gorgeous (though cloudy) with temps in the 50s. For two girls coming from 30 degree weather in Wisconsin, it was heaven! Below are some of my favorite pictures from the run (and some of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite books):

Chicago Run 1

Chicago Run 2

“You don’t have to be fast. But you’d better be fearless.”
― Christopher McDougall, Born to RunChicago Run 3 Chicago Run 4

“That was the real secret of the Tarahumara: they’d never forgotten what it felt like to love running. They remembered that running was mankind’s first fine art, our original act of inspired creation.”
Chicago Run 5 Chicago Run 6 Chicago Run 7

“Try the meditation of the trail, just walk along looking at the trail at your feet and don’t look about and just fall into a trance as the ground zips by,” Kerouac wrote. “Trails are like that: you’re floating along in a Shakespearean Arden paradise and expect to see nymphs and fluteboys, then suddenly you’re struggling in a hot broiling sun of hell in dust and nettles and poison oak… just like life.”
Chicago Run 8 Chicago Run 9 Chicago Run 10

“…there was some kind of connection between the capacity to love and the capacity to love [running]. The engineering was certainly the same: both depended on loosening your grip on your own desires, putting aside what you wanted and appreciating what you’ve got, being patient and forgiving and… undemanding…maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that getting better at one could make you better at the other.”

“The reason we race isn’t so much to beat each other,… but to be with each other.”

― Christopher McDougall, Born to Run

My Next Great Adventure

“When a resolute young [woman] steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, [s]he is often surprised to find it comes off in [her] hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson (with some positive edits)

My next great adventure

My next great adventure is running a marathon this June. What’s yours?

Running the Coast: 15 Miles of New Hampshire Coastline

Coast Run miaprimacasa.wordpress.com

Over the holidays, I dragged two of my sisters out for a 15 mile run up the New Hampshire coastline. Arguably, the coast is either 13 or 18 miles depending on if one considers the coast of New Castle as part of the whole coast or not. In our case, we chose a compromise milage of 15 (three miles more than I’ve ever run and five more than my sisters had gone). A bit ambitious to be sure, but how often do you get the opportunity to brag that you ran a state’s whole coast line? Below are some pics we shot while on the run.

Welcome to the Snow Globe: 115 Tubas & One Beautiful View

“Welcome to the snow globe,” our waitress said as she seated us at possibly Madison’s greatest brunch place, Graze.

Located right on the capitol square, the restaurant boasts a gorgeous view of the city’s capitol building (the largest dome in North America, if I’m remembering correctly) as well as a delicious menu featuring produce and meat from local Wisconsin farms. A bit pricey (yep, I dropped $20 for an omelet and a coffee) but worth it to enjoy the first snow of December.

My friends and I stumbled upon a band of 115 tubas and baritones in the capitol building on Saturday afternoon. We came to visit the huge Christmas tree, which with it’s multitude of ornaments almost puts the Chicago’s Daley Plaza tree to shame. The music began as a low rumble for at least a good thirty seconds before the Christmas tune was audible. What a lucky chance encounter!

The weekend before, we started our Saturday night at Madison’s Old Sugar Distillery (check out Canvas Lands’ End great interview with the owner) located on Main St. Highly recommend the Old Fashioned with brandy.

Ran across these contraptions down the street from the distillery, which though it is located in a very quite industrial area, does boast excellent free street parking.

Thanksgiving in Chicago: Christkindlmarket & Zoo Lights

Last weekend, I made my annual visit to Chicago’s Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza. The event features traditional Bavarian food (like brat wurst, potato pancakes, mulled wine…and beer of course) as well as German holiday gifts, many of which are handmade. I followed the German Christmas market with a trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo Lights, which are, in fact, just as good as I remember them being when I was six. I even had time to stop by Swirlz Cupcakes for one of the best cupcakes in the city.
