hello, london + oxford!

Oxford England #100DaysofMiaPrima
Back to the UK! After a two day “break” in the Netherlands, my sister and I headed back to the UK for a quick weekend trip to London and Oxford. We have both been to London before, so this weekend was filled with pleasantly tourist-y free events. Well, minus an Inspector Morse tour in Oxford that is! We explored Oxford’s classically British pubs, enjoyed (our now regular meal of) fish ’n chips, admired the University’s stunning architecture, and popped into charming bookstores. In London, we visited Camden Passage for great cafes, charity shops, and vintage finds. We stopped by Selfridge’s to experience the 100+ year old department store ourselves (and we’re not disappointed). And of course we took a leisurely stroll through Hyde Park for some people and pigeon watching (“Where are their nests? I mean, have you ever seen a baby pigeon?”).

I can only hope I’ll be back to the UK soon enough!

windows to the world in dubrovnik, croatia

Dubrovnik is a ancient wall city that hugs the Adriatic coast. It’s old buildings and rich history provide views like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Through 16th century church windows, spy holes that dot the medieval walls, and venerable Roman ruins, I spotted some breath-taking views that range from the clear waters of the Adriatic to leafy hill tops. What’s captured through these windows is more than a scene; they reflect the unforgettable experience of pausing and seeing the world anew.

the gibbson girl european photoshoot

Besides having twice as much fun, hanging out with my twin sister also gives me the opportunity to use her as my model for my vintage Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl. Usually, I photograph myself wearing the vintage styles that I sell in the online shop, but the process is usually tedious and well, not super fun. But I love taking photos of my sister wearing the clothes. Recently, we decked her out in some of my favorite European vintage finds and conducted a photoshoot among the cobblestone streets and narrow canals of Den Bosch.

I think we got some pretty darn good shots! Now you’ll have to check to back soon for these pieces on the Etsy shop. 🙂

vintage (scottish) bangles and beads

I am in love with the UK’s charity shops. Not only are they clean and well curated, they are also extremely common. In Glasgow, I spent a couple hours popping in and out of charity shops on the West End alone. Even in small northern England towns, I found them on nearly every block.

I was also delighted to find quite a few excellent vintage jewelry finds at the charity shops. The vintage bangles in particular caught my eye and I bought more than a few for my vintage Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl.

Keep an eye out for these finds in the shop soon!

Cheers,

Sarah

hello, northern england!

My sister and I left Scotland behind to go on a mini road trip through southern Scotland and northern England. We drove from Glasgow down to County Durham to visit the Aston Workshop, an impressive classic Aston Martin restoration and sales company located in the charming hills of Northumberland. After a classic British meal, we then swung back up  towards Scotland, following the coast until we reached Berwick Upon Tweed. We stayed an evening in the quiet coastal town, enjoying castles, chilly but stunning beaches, and of course fish and chips. It was then just a mile to the Scottish Borders where we drove back up to Edinburgh to finish our tour. But we’re not done with the UK yet! Next weekend we fly to London for a quick trip.

Hi There, Scotland!

vintage (german) handmade scrunchies

I made a point of visiting Berlin’s Humana (similar to a US GoodWill) when in the German city a couple days ago. I love to see the different vintage styles that each European city has. Amsterdam is saturated in hip, bright 90s vintage, and Berlin doesn’t seem to be too different. However, what I found particularly interesting about Berlin vintage is that a portion of it belonged to East Berlin, which was dominated by DDR-sponsored fashion. Which meant cheap, plastic fabrics and styles that tended to run behind Western Germany’s trends. But this unique fashion history makes Berlin that much more interesting while shopping for vintage.

The Humana I visited in Berlin just happens to be the largest one in all of Europe, and I spent a number of hours diligently scouring each of the four floors for great vintage finds to add to my Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl.

To my luck, I discovered five handmade vintage scrunchies and snatched them up immediately. What a unique find that seems to me to represent the 80s/90s vintage vibe of Berlin today and the ingenuity of East Berliners who strove to reflect their individuality in a stifling society.

Check back soon on The Gibbson Girl to see these scrunchies again!

hi there, scotland!

My sister Angie and I landed in Edinburgh late last evening, and after an excellent Airbnb stay (and an excellent Thai breakfast!), we headed out to Glasgow where we’ll be apartment hunting. Angie’s going to the University of Glasgow, so today we explored the area around the university including apartment showings, fish and chips, ice cream, and charity shopping. Tomorrow we’re looking forward to an early breakfast and more exploring. Cross your fingers that Angie finds a great apartment too!

from iced coffee to vintage scrunchies: a day in berlin

I’m not sure if I love Berlin because of its culture, street art, and unique fashion sense or because today I was able to enjoy a vegan iced coffee and vegan burrito…but seriously, the iced coffee was a coconut water cold press with coconut milk! Whatever the reason (and I’m sure it’s all of them), I had an excellent Day #3 exploring Berlin. Unlike yesterday, I opted for public transit over cycling, as my day was packed with sites across the city. It was a morning of museums at the DDR museum and Gemäldegalerie followed by the wall art of the East Side Gallery and thrift shopping at Friedrichshain and Europe’s largest Humana (similar to the US’s GoodWill).

And yes, I bought a delicious iced coffee. But I also purchased five handmade vintage scrunchies, a crochet tank top, a tofu burger, and innumerable postcards. I don’t think I could have topped that.

A Day in Berlin (As Told Through Food)

a day in berlin (as told through food)

Day #2 in Berlin was jammed packed, especially since I chose to cycle instead of take public trans (and inevitably got lost fairly often). The day started early…and rough with one embarrassing crash into the curb (the slow-mo kind that has every pedestrian ogling), one spilled cappuccino, and one lost map. But things got rolling again soon and I cycling my way to every site on my itinerary. The best way to sum up my day is to lay it out meal by meal. After all, I’ll admit that the moments I love most on vacation are the ones where I’m eating!
