#OOTD in italy

My recent travels have taken me to a half dozen countries and countless cities. People watching is inevitable (and enjoyable), and I can’t help but observe the unique style of each city. For the next few posts titled, “#OOTD” I’ll be presenting you all with my idea for the fashion in a particular country or city. While it’s impossible to capture the style diversity of every city I visit, I’ll do my best to distill what I’ve observed as the general style in one photograph.

So here you have it! In the photograph below, I have distilled what I’ve seen of Italian street fashion into a single outfit. What do you think? Does it capture the sprezzatura” of the country?

100 years of fashion in under 2 minutes

If you haven’t seen it already, check out this video by Mode that gives us a snapshot of 100 years of changing fashion trends in less than two minutes. Honestly, I was most intrigued by the time periods I’ve lived through (90s, 2005, today). It’s hard to place what outfit will end up defining an era (when you’re actually living through it), so it’s fun to see their interpretation on the styles that really stuck.

Not to mention is great “research” for my vintage clothing Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl!

What do you think? Did they get the eras right?

Cheers!

Besides having twice as much fun, hanging out with my twin sister also gives me the opportunity to use her as my model for my vintage Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl. Usually, I photograph myself wearing the vintage styles that I sell in the online shop, but the process is usually tedious and well, not super fun. But I love taking photos of my sister wearing the clothes. Recently, we decked her out in some of my favorite European vintage finds and conducted a photoshoot among the cobblestone streets and narrow canals of Den Bosch.

I think we got some pretty darn good shots! Now you’ll have to check to back soon for these pieces on the Etsy shop. 🙂

vintage (scottish) bangles and beads

I am in love with the UK’s charity shops. Not only are they clean and well curated, they are also extremely common. In Glasgow, I spent a couple hours popping in and out of charity shops on the West End alone. Even in small northern England towns, I found them on nearly every block.

I was also delighted to find quite a few excellent vintage jewelry finds at the charity shops. The vintage bangles in particular caught my eye and I bought more than a few for my vintage Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl.

Keep an eye out for these finds in the shop soon!

Cheers,

Sarah

vintage (german) handmade scrunchies

I made a point of visiting Berlin’s Humana (similar to a US GoodWill) when in the German city a couple days ago. I love to see the different vintage styles that each European city has. Amsterdam is saturated in hip, bright 90s vintage, and Berlin doesn’t seem to be too different. However, what I found particularly interesting about Berlin vintage is that a portion of it belonged to East Berlin, which was dominated by DDR-sponsored fashion. Which meant cheap, plastic fabrics and styles that tended to run behind Western Germany’s trends. But this unique fashion history makes Berlin that much more interesting while shopping for vintage.

The Humana I visited in Berlin just happens to be the largest one in all of Europe, and I spent a number of hours diligently scouring each of the four floors for great vintage finds to add to my Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl.

To my luck, I discovered five handmade vintage scrunchies and snatched them up immediately. What a unique find that seems to me to represent the 80s/90s vintage vibe of Berlin today and the ingenuity of East Berliners who strove to reflect their individuality in a stifling society.

Check back soon on The Gibbson Girl to see these scrunchies again!

bis später!

jumpsuit love

Jumpsuits, rompers, onesies. Whatever you call them, they’ve garnered quite a following. Last Sunday at the Billboard Music Awards, Taylor Swift donned a (controversial) white Balmain jumpsuit that absolutely slayed– and in my opinion paid excellent tribute to her killer new Bad Blood music video.

Pants on the red carpet? Yes, please! Now if we can only convince Cannes that flats are also a chic choice…

can you dig it?

Lately, I’ve been fairly addicted to the British TV detective drama, George Gently. I’m a huge fan of British crime shows in general (Sherlock, Inspector Morse, Endeavour, Lewis…), but I’m particularly keen on ones that showcase vintage fashions. Gently takes place in North East England in the late 1960s. For my vintage clothing Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl, I’m always on the look out for 60s clothing. It’s absolutely my favorite era, clothing-wise: a-line dresses, bright colors, floral prints, charming glasses frames, and skinny ties. Love it!

While I haven’t acquired much 60s wear (yet!) for the Gibbson Girl, I do have some 1970s (my second favorite era!) vintage pieces that are, well, far out, man.

my first flea market adventure

The weather was cold and windy yesterday for my first flea market selling the Gibbson Girl’s vintage clothing wears. Unfortunately, this translated into low traffic and low sales for this first try. That said, I still had a great time hanging out with my younger sister, people watching, and chatting with fellow vendors. It was a good experience, despite the disappointments. I’ll be giving it another go next weekend, so wish me better luck next time!
