100 years of fashion in under 2 minutes

video credit // Mode Glam

If you haven’t seen it already, check out this video by Mode that gives us a snapshot of 100 years of changing fashion trends in less than two minutes. Honestly, I was most intrigued by the time periods I’ve lived through (90s, 2005, today). It’s hard to place what outfit will end up defining an era (when you’re actually living through it), so it’s fun to see their interpretation on the styles that really stuck.

Not to mention is great “research” for my vintage clothing Etsy shop, The Gibbson Girl!

What do you think? Did they get the eras right?

Cheers!

jumpsuit love

Jumpsuits, rompers, onesies. Whatever you call them, they’ve garnered quite a following. Last Sunday at the Billboard Music Awards, Taylor Swift donned a (controversial) white Balmain jumpsuit that absolutely slayed– and in my opinion paid excellent tribute to her killer new Bad Blood music video.

Pants on the red carpet? Yes, please! Now if we can only convince Cannes that flats are also a chic choice…

Defining a Style Uniform: Monday

I love the idea of a style uniform. I don’t mean an actual uniform, but more of an outfit guideline that makes putting together work outfits a breeze.

I’m one of those neurotic people who picks out all her outfits for the week on Sunday night (yes, shoes and accessories included….), so a uniform really appeals to me. It would make dressing easy and be the perfect, no-brainer way to show my style. And in the process of putting together a uniform, I’d have to work on defining what exactly my style is.

So, after thinking about the types of outfits that make me feel really, really confident, I put together five uniform looks, one for each day of the work week, that will hopefully serve as guidelines for my outfits going forward.

But now I’m faced with the hardest challenge: actually putting together real outfits from my real wardrobe. I think I’m going to discover some holes, and that’s great! I’m all about simplifying my wardrobe with the best key items I had find.

Below is what I came up with for day one, using only pieces from my wardrobe.

United Colors of Benetton Wool Sweater, American Eagle Outfitters Dark Wash Skinny Jeans, American Eagle Outfitters Booties, Vintage Perfume Necklace

The holes? Today was pretty easy! I own plenty of sweaters and perfect, comfy skinny jeans. But, I might want to consider some gold jewelry. Here’s what I’m thinking:

What is a staple piece in your style uniform?

A Week of Inspired Outfits: Friday

Well I did it! I eliminated five decisions each workday by creating five unique looks on Sunday. These outfits were inspired by some of my favorite brands, including Free People, Lands’ End Canvas, and j.crew. Below is Friday’s look. Like Wednesday, the Free People outfit served as more of an inspiration than a hard and fast guide, and I tried instead to capture the feel of the look.

Check out Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for more inspired outfits.

Free People

Jean Jacket, H&M

Top, Target

Jeans, American Eagle

Wedges, Lands’ End Canvas

For full disclosure and all of that good stuff, I currently work at Lands’ End (so it should be no surprise that I often end up wearing their merchandise!).

A Week of Inspired Outfits: Thursday

This week, I put together five unique outfits inspired by looks from some of my favorite brands. Here is Thursday! Be sure to check out Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I wore this outfit with a pair of black tights to combat this chilly fall weather.

A Week of Inspired Outfits: Wednesday

This week, I put together five workday outfits based on professionally styled outfits from some of my favorite brands. Monday, I was inspired by Lands’ End Canvas, and Tuesday, I was inspired by j.crew. Today, I take inspiration from Free People. Wednesday’s outfit is less like the inspiration image, but I think I was able to capture the essence of the look.

A Week of Inspired Outfits: Monday

A friend and coworker recently told me that humans are only able to make a limited number of good decisions. After a certain point, our decisions become worse and worse. And when you consider all the little decisions one makes in a day, “What should I wear?” seems like a wasted decision that could be spent, say, deciding what your monthly wardrobe splurge should be. That said, I decided to make this week’s outfit decisions all at once. I first chose five outfits from some of my favorite catalogs (J.Crew, Free People, Lands’ End Canvas, and Anthropologie) to base my own outfits on. Each day’s outfit is inspired the professionally styled look…and is one less decision I will have to make that day.

Autumn in the Country & What We’re Wearing

My sister and I spent the weekend exploring rural Wisconsin, and we visited a small apple orchard where we picked up a peck of apples, this amazing spoon ring, and two cider brats. It finally felt like fall, so we tried to dress for the season!

4 Unique & Easy Ways to Style a Classic Oxford Shirt

I ran across this post by Refinery 29 and loved the concept of unique outfits based on one classic shirt. However, I didn’t feel like going out and spending money on these looks, as great as they were. Instead, I decided to create four unique looks based on a classic white Oxford shirt…using only items from my closet. All outfits are appropriate for my work place (which is admittedly very casual). It’s a fresh way to approach my closet without spending more money. I can’t wait to try them out!
