Long Hair Don’t Care

Four years ago, when I was living and studying in Florence, Italy, I chopped off my long locks for a chic Italian pixie. The whole affair was very Audrey Hepurn in Roman Holiday. The Italian woman giving me the cut didn’t speak a word of English. The only things she said to me were “corto” (short) and “bel viso.” If a gorgeous Italian hairdresser tells you have a have beautiful face that you need show off with a pixie cut, you believe her. And go for it.

And for the next four years, I declared that I’d never go back to long hair again. With my short hair, my curls are bouncier and take almost no maintenance. I don’t have to worry about knots at the base of my neck from winter scarves or trying (and failing) to experiment with new up-dos.

But I’ve been doing a lot of winter training (see: Pittsburgh Marathon, Here I Come!), and I’m getting really, really sick of spending ten minutes trying to get my hair into the tiniest ponytail you’ve ever seen.

And it is winter after all. People grow out there hair in the winter, right? The whole point of No Shave November really comes down to warmth, doesn’t it?

So I’m growing out my hair. And I can’t wait to get those curls into a ponytail again.

Cheers!

p.s. In other news, my twin moved to the Netherlands (no, not Norway), I’m strongly considering getting a Labradoodle, I hurt my leg (which is one reason why I chose triathlon. I’ll be swimming and cycling for next few weeks!), and I’ve been listening to a load of my Dad’s old records. Stevie Ray Vaughan being my current spin.

Vegetarian Pasta Dish in Just Ten Minutes

The hardest part about trying to eat more vegetables is actually incorporating them into a weekday dinner. By the time I’m done with work and have finished my workout, I have little to no tolerance for cutting up veggies and doing anything with them, let alone sautéing them and adding them to (my usual) pasta. But then, Christmas came! And my ever clever little sister gifted me the wondrous Brieftons Spiral Splicer.

So this evening I boiled my usual whole wheat pasta, but instead of reaching for the boring can of tomato sauce, I spiral cut  a whole carrot and about 12% of a large cucumber (in literally 30 seconds). Feeling ambitious, I sauteed the veggies in olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper and added a quarter can of diced tomatoes to the mix. It took longer (9 minutes) for the pasta to cook than for me to prepare the veggies. Most certainly the healthiest meal I can think of that takes less than 10 minutes to make. And look how gorgeous it looks, too?

A (Small) Tribute to the Colonizer of Dreams

I don’t know about you, but I’ll be spending the evening celebrating by drinking what’s left in my bottle of port wine,  listening to Ed Sheeran’s “I See Fire” on repeat, and rereading The Hobbit. Cheers!

Pittsburgh Marathon, Here I Come!

AZ Marathon

I’m ready to take on my second full (that’s 26.2 miles!) marathon…or at least I will be ready by May 4th. This time I’m sticking local (for my first marathon, I made the haul up to to Duluth, Minnesota) and running in the Pittsburgh Marathon. Probably the most exciting thing is that my little sister will be joining me as well as some awesome coworkers. Only one thing is better than running alone. And that’s running with friends. Here we go!

NaNoWriMo? Check!

One month, and 50,000 words later, and I’ve completed my first National Novel Writing Month. My first novel (still can’t get over saying that!) is loosely based on the romantic heroines from three of my most favorite Jane Austen novels. Like I told my sister, I think the novel ended up becoming a weird hyperbole of my life as a working post-grad. Whether that’s good or bad, only a solid revision process and some honest feedback from friends can say….

NaNoWriMo Tea

The best day of NaNoWriMo was when I made a stop at the local record store to buy some vintage Beatles and CCR records, then enjoyed a tea at a local coffee shop while the snow started to fall outside.

Post NaNoWriMo

Three great reason to help get my up early on a Saturday and my new gps watch for added motivation! I got a lot less sleep in Novemeber than I would have liked, but I can’t deny that it was worth it.

NaNoWriMo Winner!

Enough said. 🙂

So glad to say that most of my friends who joined me on this adventure finished successfully as well! Congrats to the ladies of  ex-pat x and Hanger Hiatus. Check out their blogs for what inspired them during NaNoWriMo and what they’re up to now.

Ciao!

Sweaters That Start Conversations

One of my top trends this fall is definitely graphics. Graphic tees, graphic sweatshirts, and, my personal fave, graphic sweaters. I love them even more when they have puns or cheeky sayings on them. Because what’s more “conversational” than your sweater making a pun?

More conversational sweaters I love:

For full disclosure and all of that good stuff, I currently work at American Eagle Outfitters (so it should be no surprise that I often end up wearing their merchandise!).

I Write Like J.D. Salinger, Apparently

Ok, that’s definitely an overstatement. But it was interesting to see a sort of objective analysis of my writing style (style being the key word, not content or quality, necessarily!). Regardless of who I write like, I’m up to 40,000 words on my NaNoWriMo novel. Only 10k to go. Who do you write like?

Fall Mix Tape 2013

Fall Mix Tape Art #miaprimacasa
Every season, I ask my friends to think about the sights, sounds, and feelings that remind them of the season. For me at autumn, I think of sweaters, hot chocolate, football games, and burning leaves. Then, I ask them to send me any songs that conjure up that imagery. When everyone has submitted, I compile the music together into three curated albums and create cover art. In 2013, we are celebrating the anniversary of the mix tape! (And also celebrating the season and the joy that comes along with sharing music you love and getting to know your friends a bit better on a new level). So I thought I’d share the first album with you all today. The first album, titled “State”, might be my favorite and probably sums up the feeling of the complete mix tape best. Enjoy and happy fall!
