Autumn in the Country & What We’re Wearing

My sister and I spent the weekend exploring rural Wisconsin, and we visited a small apple orchard where we picked up a peck of apples, this amazing spoon ring, and two cider brats. It finally felt like fall, so we tried to dress for the season!

Sweater, Lands’ End Canvas

Jeans, Levi’s

Flats, Lands’ End Canvas

Scarf, silk from China (a gift!)

Glasses, vintage find from Madison, WI

Bracelet, Angela Caputi’s Boutique in Florence, Italy

For full disclosure and all of that good stuff, I currently work at Lands’ End (so it should be no surprise that I often end up wearing their merchandise!).

Leggings, Vera Wang

Dress, thrift store find from Portsmouth, NH

Glasses, H&M in Prague

Boots, GoodWill

Necklace, garage sale in New Hampshire

What’s your favorite fall outfit?

Ciao!

Great Finds: Spoon Ring

Maybe I’m the last to discover spoon rings (my friends seem to have seen them many times before!), but I thought they were such unique pieces to stumble upon, especially since I found this gorgeous ring at an apple orchard gift shop. For $10, I found a ring I find myself wearing almost everyday. Not a bad find!

Fashion Week Begins & Two Sartorialist-Inspired Stories

Last week, The Sartorialist posted a contest that challenged readers to write a 200 words or fewer story inspired by three of The Sartorialist’s images. Winners recived access to a private party at Danziger Gallery in New York, a hotel stay, and a free bag.(original post here) Not a bad deal! Which is why I convinced my sister, a writer, to submit to the contest. Unfortunately she didn’t win, but I thought her stories were too good not to gain some credit. Celebrate the start of Fashion week by reading her stories, below.

This city is a trick coin. It appears two-sided, a light and a dark, but it’s all the same. She knows this, perhaps is the only one who notices. This is a snow globe of a city. Eerily bright, but underground a revolution brews. She walked into the day like one walks into a painting.Toulouse-Lautrec reds and ugly women in beautiful clothes.  This city is a kaleidoscope. When it turns, the colors and the shapes collide, but does it really ever change? When she slipped into her heels as the sun rose that morning, she knew the only way tobring color into this city was through the soles of her shoes.

There is a time to mourn and a time to dance. The incense had curled up beyond the alter, past the stained glass angel with his sheathed sword and eyes upraised. A wisp of white had clung to existence, reluctant toleave this world in very much the same way she had. They danced the jitterbug. They fought over dinners of baked pasta and wine. They grew a family, in whoseears danced the words “hard work” from birth to, for one, premature death. The children were there with him this day as he watched the white smoke float upinto the church’s rafters, but he had to leave even them behind. He needed towalk alone, for the first memorable time, without her. His cap was well worn, but he donned it today day anyway. She had given it to him for their thirtieth anniversary. Then was a time, as it is even now, to dance.

My Cameo Jewelry Collection

I started collecting cameo jewelry about three or four years ago, just simply because I think the pieces are beautiful and intriguing. I’ve focused on collecting costume jewelry cameos (for the moment!) as they are less expensive and easy to discover in a wide variety. Oddly, I rarely wear the cameo pieces, so I’m going to have to come up with a creative way to display this collection so that I finally do it justice! Here are some of my favorites:

Great Finds: Vintage Perfume Necklace

I discovered this unique contraption at a local antique shop, and though I first spotted it for its gorgeous exterior, was even more intrigued when I learned what was inside. The back of this pretty vintage necklace (circa 1970s, is my best guess) opens up to reveal a spot for cream perfume. There is still some old perfume left (yuck!) so I’ll have to clean it out, but I do intend to add my own fragrance. What a perfect way to freshen up in the middle of a work day or a long night out!

Even better is knowing that I got a great deal for the find too! I bought it for $10. It’s selling online for $78 on Ruby Lane.

4 Unique & Easy Ways to Style a Classic Oxford Shirt

I ran across this post by Refinery 29 and loved the concept of unique outfits based on one classic shirt. However, I didn’t feel like going out and spending money on these looks, as great as they were. Instead, I decided to create four unique looks based on a classic white Oxford shirt…using only items from my closet. All outfits are appropriate for my work place (which is admittedly very casual). It’s a fresh way to approach my closet without spending more money. I can’t wait to try them out!

5 Images to Inspire

Because I could use some inspiration on this rainy evening.

5 Fall Trends That I Can’t Wait For

If you haven’t noticed already, clothing brands have been launching their fall collections this past week. I’ve already noticed a few great fall trends that I am excited to buy (I will try my best to wait until September!). I also figure it’s a good idea for me to have an understanding what I want to buy before I actually go out there  and shop, since I do have to consider my budget. These trends are currently top of my list, and I will spend the next couple of months searching for some great deals on them.

1. Colored Tights

A great variation on summer’s colored denim, colored tights will be a great way to keep the bright colors of last season alive through autumn.

$9.90 from Nordstrom

2. Venetian or Smoking Shoes

These shoes are a comfortable alternative to a heel and a unique spin on a flat. Not to mention that they can easily be dressed up or down.

$49.95 from GAP

3. Oversized Coats

They are finally available to the masses! I first fell in love with Mary Margaret’s oversized coat in the first season of Once Upon a Time.

4. Leather

I always consider leather, particularly leather jackets and bags, a staple for fall, but this season, leather is becoming even more popular (and look out for hybrid leather-fabric designs too).

$99.90 from Steve Madden at Nordstrom

5. Printed Dress Pants

I saw plenty of printed denim and leggings this spring, but I am really excited to see the prints taken up a notch in classy dress pants.

$110 from J.Crew

What fall trend are you most excited for?

Great Finds: Vintage Patterns & 1970s Vogue Sewing Book

I ran across these unique vintage patterns at two different antique shops in Wisconsin. I’m going to attempt to sew using the patterns, but if I have no luck, I’ll be glad to use them as decoration in my bedroom. Sew, Mama, Sew! has some useful tips about sewing from vintage patterns. One of them happens to be buy an “old school sewing book.” Thankfully, I picked up a 1970s (my era of choice for patterns incidentally) copy of The Vogue Sewing Book of Fitting Adjustments & Alternations at Good Will.

Total Cost?

$7.50 for the vintage patterns

$3 for the Vogue sewing book

______

$10.50 (plus whatever I end up spending fabric–don’t worry, I’ll keep you updated!)

Have you ever tried to sew using vintage patterns?

My Work Wardrobe

As a business major, I’d always sort of figured I’d be wearing black dresses and blazers to work. When I got my first post-graduation job, I found myself in a much more casual work environment, which is great except that all I really owned was super casual comfy stuff, going downtown night wear, and really formal interview clothes. How horrible! Now I had a job and I had to go shopping.
My Work Wardrobe
Still being budget-conscious, I created a vision for my wardrobe that broke it down into my essentials: polished tees, put-together jeans and chinos, a casual blazer, a cardigan, a quality watch and a quality bag, and flats. Obviously, variety makes things more interesting so I’ve expanded the basics to include nude heels, non-flip-flop (did I tell you I hate flip-flops?) sandals, and a scarf (my office is chilly in the summer, unlike my apartment at the moment).
I prefer to shop resale and vintage since I find I can get all the quality brands I love much cheaper and still in great shape, so having a clear wardrobe vision with clear basics will help guide my shopping and hopefully prevent me from buying something unneeded.
What is your work wardrobe vision?
Ciao!
